Chapter 4: Geometry
Exercise 4.3 Solutions
1. Observe the diagram and fill in the blanks.
- (i) 'A', 'O' and 'B' are collinear points.
Reason: They all lie on the same straight horizontal line. - (ii) 'A', 'O' and 'C' are non-collinear points.
Reason: They do not form a single straight line. - (iii) 'A', 'B' and 'C' are non-collinear points.
Reason: Point C lies outside the line passing through A and B. - (iv) O is the point of concurrency.
Reason: All three straight lines (AB, DC, and EF) intersect at the common point O.
2. Draw any line and mark any 3 points that are collinear.
Collinear points are points that lie on the exact same straight line.
Points X, Y, and Z lie on the same line, making them collinear.
3. Draw any line and mark any 4 points that are not collinear.
Non-collinear points do not all lie on a single straight line.
Points P, Q, R, and S are non-collinear because point S lies off the line.
4. Draw any 3 lines to have a point of concurrency.
Concurrent lines are three or more lines that intersect at a single shared point.
Lines l₁, l₂, and l₃ intersect at the common point O. Point O is the point of concurrency.
5. Draw any 3 lines that are not concurrent. Find the number of points of intersection.
When 3 lines are drawn such that they are not concurrent and no two lines are parallel, they form a triangle layout.
Conclusion: The number of unique points of intersection formed by these 3 non-concurrent lines is 3.
